Head lice should be removed before the eggs hatch

One of a parent’s worst nightmares for their children to bring home is head lice. These tiny, flightless parasites live in human hair, spread quickly, and chew on the human scalp in order to feed on the blood. While these parasites are not dangerous for any reason, they spread from person to person quickly, and can be very annoying; their bites can even lead a child to scratch themselves into infection. Lice is most common in girls, and hits most kids from ages 3-12. Because they spread quickly, getting rid of them quickly, and especially before their young hatch, is the most effective way to rid your home of these bugs. Lice is easy to spot: if your child is excessively itching, part and check their hair and look for bugs or red bumps on thescalp. If you do find lice, make sure to call your child’s school or daycare and let them know so they can prevent it from spreading there. But once you have found it, how do you get rid of it? Well, there are many options. You should get a recommendation from your doctor for a medicated rinse, lotion, or shampoo; these can be either over-the-counter or prescription. It is crucial that you pay attention and closely follow the directions on the packaging. Once you have done a full treatment, take a fine tooth comb through your child’s hair to get rid of the dead bugs and eggs. Most doctors recommend that you repeat this entire process after 7-10 days. If you want to stay away from chemicals (and any child under 2 shouldn’t use these), you can simply remove by hand, using the fine tooth comb on wet, conditioned hair. This should be done every 3-4 days for about 2 weeks after you see the last live bug. Licedie pretty quick once they are off of the body, so do not worry too much about cleaning up the house. Do make sure to wash all bedding, vacuum the floors, and disinfect all brushes and combs. Head lice are gross, but you can get rid of them quickly.
