HForCare | Head lice should be removed before the eggs hatch

HForCare | Head lice should be removed before the eggs hatch Head lice should be removed before the eggs hatch One of a parent’s worst nightmares for their children to bring home is head  lice . These tiny, flightless parasites live in human  hair , spread quickly, and chew on the human scalp in order to feed on the blood. While these parasites are not dangerous for any reason, they spread from person to person quickly, and can be very annoying; their bites can even lead a child to scratch themselves into infection.  Lice  is most common in girls, and hits most kids from ages 3-12. Because they spread quickly, getting rid of them quickly, and especially before their young hatch, is the most effective way to rid your home of these bugs.  Lice  is easy to spot: if your child is excessively itching, part and check their hair and look for bugs or red bumps on the scalp . If you do find lice, make sure to call your child’s school or daycare and let them know s...

HForCare | The history of toothpaste

Image
HForCare | The history of toothpaste The history of toothpaste Brushing our  teeth  is something that we do daily, and often we never stop and think about where the tradition came from and how  toothpaste  was first created. Well, here we will do a little bit of that. One of the  first  recorded instances of cleaning the  mouth  dates all the way back to the time of Buddha (23-79 AD). During this time, it is said that  Buddha would use a “ tooth stick ”, which was given to him from the God Sakka, as part of his personal hygiene  routine. This routine would also include drinking goats’ milk, which was said to make your breath sweet. However, we don’t see the first record of  toothpaste  until 1780: it consisted of  scrubbing  your  teeth  with a formula which included burnt bread. Some other types of  toothpaste  back then included dragon’s blood, cinnamon, and burnt alum, all mixed and used every...

HForCare | Get rid of viruses, and stop their spread, by simply washing your hands

HForCare | Get rid of viruses, and stop their spread, by simply washing your hands Get rid of viruses, and stop their spread, by simply washing your hands Picture by Moyan_Brenn We have all heard that we should wash our  hands  to prevent spreading germs. But do we really know why, and how? It is indeed true that a good hand wash will help prevent the spread of germs, viruses , and illnesses which people, especially children, carry and pass around to each other. But we must be aware, and teach our children, that just a simple run of your hands under water. Get your hands wet, use a good amount of soap (plain or antibacterial will work), and  scrub  your hands. This should include the backs, palms, between fingers, wrists, and under fingernails. Then rinse well and dry.  Scrubbing  should be done for about 20 seconds, typically long enough to sing “Happy Birthday” twice. This is a good way to teach your kids. A good alternative to washing during our busy d...

Boosting Testosterone Leads to Dramatic Increases in Libido, Energy, and Stamina | How Life Works

Image
Boosting Testosterone Leads to Dramatic Increases in Libido, Energy, and Stamina | How Life Works Boosting Testosterone Leads to Dramatic Increases in Libido, Energy, and Stamina One of the unfortunate realities of life is that as we get older we sometimes feel less energetic, less "in the game." It's a disturbing moment, one that usually hits after an unexpected physical challenge. Maybe you've been unable to maintain your usual workout levels, or recovery is taking a lot longer than it used to. Perhaps fixes to the house are just a bit more difficult, or you find yourself feeling tired more often. What's most startling about this realization is that you don't normally "feel old" but, nevertheless, you know you're not the man you used to be. The solution? It could be as simple as boosting your free testosterone levels. Most people don't realize that testosterone is a vital hormone for maintaining overall good health. An article from Live...

HForCare | Are women smarter than men?

Image
HForCare | Are women smarter than men? Are women smarter than men? Some are saying that when it comes to online behavior , especially in  social media , women tend to  act smarter , and be more responsible and mature. The Pew Research Center  recently did a study which polled 2,277 adults online. When it comes to privacy settings and using caution in their  behavior ,  women tended to show the more cautious behavior . One place in which women were smarter is the privacy settings: 2/3 of all female uses polled only allowed the friends to view their  social media  profiles restriction-free, while for men, this number will less than ½; 14% of  women  chose fully public profiles, as opposed to 26% of men. Other areas in which  women  are seen as more responsible online include who is kept in and out of one’s social network:  women  not only keep their circle  smaller , they are also more prone to kicking people out of i...

HForCare | More Benefits of Folic Acid

Image
HForCare | More Benefits of Folic Acid More Benefits of Folic Acid Many of us have heard of  folic acid . Most women know how important this is during  pregnancy  to help us have healthy babies . We have known for years that this helps prevent  miscarriages  and birth defects. However, recent research  has also proven that  folic acid  can help prevent some types of  autism . Some of the highest numbers was a 40% less risk of having a child with autism  if mom takes  folic acid  supplements during pregnancy . Eating lots of  greens  during  pregnancy helps, but in order to get enough, supplements will have to be consumed. The most crucial time for this is the 4 weeks before conception through 8 weeks of pregnancy . That is the most critical growth period for baby. While the research on  autism is still in the works and inconclusive, we know quite a bit about it. The absolute chance of having an  autis...

HForCare | Remedies for urinary incontinence

Image
HForCare | Remedies for urinary incontinence Remedies for urinary incontinence Urinary incontinence  can be an embarrassing and frustrating condition. The good news is there is help. The type of help you will need will depend on a number of variables, but here we will have a broad discussion on the types of treatments used. One of the easiest ways to combat this problem is  behavioral treatments . Among these include bladder training. This consists of simply holding your bladder when you get the urge, starting at about 10 minutes. The more you do this, the longer you will be able to hold it. Creating a “schedule” of sorts is another method of bladder training, and is just as is sound:  urinating  at specified times throughout the day. Lastly for bladder training, there is simply watching your  diet  and fluid intake. One easy way to do this is to cut out  alcohol  and  caffeine . You can also undergo physical therapy  to help: working ...
